Kashmir is experiencing a shift in its everyday texture of life, balancing historical tensions with modern changes in infrastructure and tourism. While a young tourist from Chandigarh found his trip to Pahalgam unforgettable, his mother noted an eerie undercurrent, showing how visitors view the region differently from those shaped by its past.
Infrastructure And Tourism
Tourist arrivals in the Kashmir division reached nearly 98 lakh and 2.36 crore across Jammu and Kashmir in 2024 before dipping after the April 2025 Pahalgam attack, though visitor numbers are now climbing again. The Vande Bharat train from Jammu to Srinagar, inaugurated this May, has reduced travel time to under five hours. Conceived in the late 19th century under Dogra ruler Maharaja Pratap Singh, the rail project took nearly three decades to build through difficult terrain. It features 36 tunnels, 943 bridges, the Chenab Bridge as the highest railway arch bridge in the world, and the Anji Khad bridge soaring 331 meters above the Anji River. Srinagar now boasts over 200 cafés and a multiplex that opened in 2022.
Remaining Challenges
Deep tensions remain regarding full statehood, the restoration of Article 370, land frauds, delimitation rows, fuzzy electoral rolls, and drug problems. The Lieutenant Governor holds authority over the bureaucracy and police under the Union Territory framework, while AFSPA remains in force and security is omnipresent.
Context
Infrastructure projects like the Jammu-Srinagar rail link aim to improve regional connectivity and economic integration through difficult mountainous terrain. Such developments often alter local commerce and tourism patterns while regions continue to navigate complex administrative and security frameworks.
