Several film industry figures have expressed support for demonstrations in Delhi calling for the exit of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar due to claimed flaws in voter roll revisions. Actor and host Shekhar Suman recently shared his views on the public's freedom to voice dissent without resorting to violence.
Views on Dissent
During an interview on a digital media platform, Shekhar stated that demonstrations are a normal element of civic life and politics. He mentioned that people have protested since childhood when denied what they want, adding that peaceful efforts are entirely correct when desires are unmet. Referencing Mahatma Gandhi, he noted that the freedom fighter taught citizens to fight for justice, and a collective public voice forces authorities to listen.
Sanjay Dutt Controversy
In a separate development, actor Sanjay Dutt faced online criticism after appearing as a guest on Shekhar's program and stating that he no longer sensed peace in India. The actor, who reportedly holds a ten-year residency visa for the United Arab Emirates, later clarified that his statements were misunderstood and described the show's dialogue as scripted. Shekhar defended his guest, stating that the actor holds deep respect for the nation and its citizens.
Context
Public demonstrations are a recognised method for citizens to demand accountability from elected officials in a democratic system. Entertainment figures often use public platforms or interviews to share personal opinions on current social and political matters.
