Price Updates
Gold prices have gone up slightly in Kolkata between October 5 and October 7, according to the Swarna Shilpa Bachao Committee. The selling price of 22-karat gold rose from 13,960 rupees to 14,000 rupees per gram over two days, an increase of 40 rupees per gram. Selling old 22-karat gold or jewelry also fetched a higher rate, moving from 13,371 rupees to 13,408 rupees per gram. Other gold varieties saw similar upward movement. Fine Gold at 995 purity rose by 41 rupees to reach 14,735 rupees per gram on October 7, while 18-karat gold increased by 35 rupees to 11,495 rupees per gram. In contrast, silver prices moved in the opposite direction. One kilogram of silver dropped by 338 rupees to 2,24,553 rupees. These price charts do not include the 3 percent GST, which buyers must pay separately.
City Rates And Silver
Meanwhile, separate data shows that silver prices held steady for eight days after a sharp fall of 5,000 rupees per kilogram on October 1, before jumping by 5,000 rupees on October 10. By Sunday, October 11, gold and silver prices remained stable across the country, though weekly trends showed 24-karat gold per 10 grams rising by 2,240 rupees and 22-karat gold gaining 2,050 rupees. Rates vary across Indian cities. In Delhi, Lucknow, and Jaipur, 10 grams of 24-karat gold costs 1,51,570 rupees, with 22-karat at 1,38,950 rupees and 18-karat at 1,13,720 rupees. Kolkata, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad price 24-karat gold at 1,51,420 rupees, 22-karat at 1,38,800 rupees, and 18-karat at 1,13,570 rupees per 10 grams. Chennai matches these rates for gold except for 18-karat at 1,11,400 rupees, while Patna and Ahmedabad list 24-karat at 1,51,470 rupees and 22-karat at 1,38,850 rupees. For silver, Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai price one kilogram at 2,40,000 rupees, while Chennai stands the highest at 2,45,000 rupees.
Purity And Market Factors
Understanding gold purity helps buyers make informed choices. Twenty-four-karat gold contains about 99.9 percent pure gold, making it very soft and best suited for bars, coins, and investments rather than daily wear. Twenty-two-karat gold holds 91.6 percent pure gold and is most common for traditional Indian jewelry. Eighteen-karat gold contains 75 percent pure gold with 25 percent other metals, commonly used for diamond or gemstone-studded modern jewelry. Fourteen-karat gold drops to 58.5 percent pure gold and offers higher durability for everyday wear. Market experts point out that domestic conditions, international markets, the US dollar value, crude oil prices, and the global economy drive these price fluctuations. While short-term prices may see minor increases, sudden spikes in crude oil could place extra pressure on gold rates.
Context
Precious metal prices in India are closely tied to international bullion markets and currency exchange rates, meaning global economic shifts quickly reflect in local retail jewelry stores. Buyers often track purity levels like 22-karat and 18-karat alongside hallmark certifications to ensure they receive the exact quality of gold they pay for.
