Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated that India is ready to become a global hub for automobile manufacturing. Speaking at The Dilli Dialogue on Monday, Goyal noted that international carmakers will increasingly build vehicles in the country as domestic demand grows to a viable scale. Goyal pointed out that strict rules in Europe make local production less competitive there. He recalled how Tata Motors faced major challenges after buying Jaguar, but later fixed its operations and moved some manufacturing to India to make the business profitable.
Trade Deals And Exports
India and the European Union finished talks on a free trade agreement in January. The deal was jointly announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at the 16th India-EU Summit. This agreement includes a quota-based car plan that lets European makers sell higher-priced models in India while creating chances to make and export Indian-built vehicles to Europe. India also gave similar tariff concessions to the United Kingdom under a trade deal that started on July 15, mostly covering expensive cars while keeping lower-priced segments closed. Goyal mentioned that strong demand for electronics, white goods, and semiconductors could boost local manufacturing investments. He also highlighted India's young workforce as a key edge over other economies dealing with aging populations. The government aims for $1 trillion in goods and service exports this fiscal year. From April to August, exports grew 17.85 percent to $215.91 billion, while imports went up 18.21 percent to $363 billion.
Context
Free trade agreements between countries help reduce import taxes and trade barriers to encourage cross-border business. Ministers like Piyush Goyal regularly promote domestic industrial growth and trade policies at public forums to attract foreign investments and boost local manufacturing capabilities.
