Chennai police have registered a sixth case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act against Gem Granites chairman R. Veeramani. The new case follows statements from two minors who accused the businessman of sexual abuse, with police now probing the alleged exploitation of ten minor girls across all six cases.

Background

Mr. Veeramani has also been booked in a 2004 case involving the abetment of suicide of a minor. Following his arrest in the first POCSO case along with his associates, he was lodged at Puzhal Central Prison and later detained under the Goondas Act. Police plan to formally arrest him in the remaining cases and have filed a request in the designated court for his custody for questioning. Meanwhile, police conducted searches at his residential premises on Lloyd's Road in Royapettah.

Context

The POCSO Act is a special Indian law enacted to protect children from sexual assault, harassment, and pornography, ensuring stringent legal processes for child abuse cases. Legal procedures in such matters typically involve formal police custody requests, court hearings, and protective measures for minors involved in the investigation.
