Sunny Deol returns in a rugged new avatar in the crime thriller Suryaa: Ant Se Aarambh Tak, with its motion poster and release date unveiled on October 12. The tagline describes a protagonist torn between his past and present, while the makers note that the character's investigation draws him into complex territory. The film is a Hindi remake of the 2018 Malayalam film Joseph, which originally starred Joju George as a retired police officer looking into a double homicide. M. Padmakumar, who directed the original film, returns to helm this new version, marking his Bollywood directorial debut.

Reaction

The announcement has drawn mixed responses from internet users. On X, several people questioned the need for a theatrical Hindi remake when the original Malayalam film is already available to watch online. Others noted that the film could face box office competition due to the Diwali release of Ramayana: Part 1, in which Sunny Deol plays Hanuman. Conversely, some viewers expressed enthusiasm on Instagram for Deol's departure from his usual action-heavy roles, praising his new look and potential in a crime thriller.

Background

The 2018 Malayalam film Joseph was made on a budget of three crore rupees and earned twenty-eight crore rupees while running for over one hundred days in theatres. Written by former police officer Shahi Kabir, the original film earned Joju George the Kerala State Film Award for Best Character Actor and a Special Mention at the National Film Awards. Its success previously led to Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada remakes titled Visithiran, Sekhar, and Ravi Bopanna respectively.

Context

Suryaa is produced by Kamal Mukut, Deepak Mukut, Hemmant Mukut, and Lokesh Mukut under the MM Moviez banner, and features a cast including Ravi Kishan, Pragya Jaiswal, Jisshu Sengupta, Tinu Anand, and Manish Wadhwa. The film is scheduled to arrive in theatres on November 20, 2026.
