Opposition leaders marched to the Supreme Court on Monday to file a petition against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The BJP hit back at Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and the Congress, labelling the march as pure theatrics.
BJP Statements
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan accused the Congress of blaming the Election Commission for its defeats instead of its own visionless leadership. Chouhan said at a press conference that the Congress seeks to mislead the public by questioning institutions like the judiciary, the Election Commission, and the Armed Forces. He pointed to recent electoral defeats in Assam, Tripura, Rajasthan local bodies, and Himachal Pradesh. Chouhan also criticised Gandhi for the Supreme Court visit to meet Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, whose request was turned down. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju termed the Congress a directionless party in a post on X, while former Union Minister Anurag Thakur accused Opposition leaders of lacking an understanding of rules and laws.
Context
Political parties in India frequently trade charges over election results and the role of constitutional bodies. Public friction between the ruling party and the opposition often intensifies following electoral setbacks and institutional protests.
