Airport Confrontation

Former Bangladesh interim government leader Muhammad Yunus was heckled by a group of protesters at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. A video on social media shows Yunus in a wheelchair while people approach him and shout slogans like "you are a terrorist" and "why you come here?". The protesters also accused him of hurting democracy and criticised how he ran the country during his time as head of the interim government. Yunus moved through the airport accompanied by security personnel and associates while the shouting continued.

Government Reaction

The Bangladesh government reacted sharply to the incident and promised legal action. Prime Minister's Information and Broadcasting Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman told reporters at the Secretariat that the government will use the same legal process used after actress Azmeri Haque Badhon was allegedly harassed in Italy last month. Zahed blamed members of the Awami League living abroad for the incident and described it as "Awami League terror". The government also stated it will examine whether there was any security lapse in the protocol arranged for Yunus as a former chief adviser.

Context

High-profile political figures often face public protests during international travel when their home countries experience deep political shifts. The interim administration in Bangladesh took charge after the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government in August 2024. Governments typically review airport security protocols and diplomatic arrangements when visiting former leaders encounter security breaches abroad.
