UPDATE - follow-up to Mahindra XUV 3XO CNG spied with twin cylinder setup: New spy images reveal the upcoming Mahindra XUV 3XO CNG features a dual-cylinder tank setup beneath the boot floor designed to save luggage space. The model will make its debut tomorrow, adding a fourth powertrain choice alongside petrol, diesel, and electric options.

Technical Details

The CNG kit is likely to be paired with the 1.2-litre MPFI turbo-petrol engine rather than the 1.2-litre direct-injection motor, as MPFI units are simpler and cheaper to adapt. The test vehicle featured dual-tone alloy wheels and a manual gearbox, indicating higher trims will get the CNG option. Inside, a dedicated CNG and petrol selector button sits below the driver-side AC vent. Teasers and spy shots also point to features like a panoramic or single-pane sunroof, LED DRLs and headlights, and a body-coloured front grille.

Market Impact

According to Rushlane, the SUV registered 8,302 units in August 2026, marking a 50.37 percent year-on-year increase. The new variant aims to boost festive sales and help Mahindra meet upcoming CAFE III emission rules taking effect in April 2027 by balancing CO2 emissions from its diesel range. Price announcements are expected in the coming weeks.

Context

Dual-cylinder CNG configurations are becoming popular in Indian compact SUVs because they preserve usable boot space compared to traditional single-tank setups. Automakers are expanding alternative fuel choices to comply with stricter government emission standards while meeting consumer demand for lower running costs.
