Mahindra XUV 3XO CNG Spied With Twin-Cylinder Setup Ahead of Launch

The Mahindra XUV 3XO has been spotted testing with a dual-cylinder CNG tank layout just a day before its market debut. This new variant introduces a fourth powertrain choice to the compact SUV lineup, joining existing petrol, diesel, and electric options.
Powertrain and Design
The CNG kit is expected to pair with the 1.2-litre MPFI turbo-petrol engine rather than the direct-injection option, as MPFI systems are simpler and less costly to adapt. The spied test vehicle featured dual-tone alloy wheels and a dedicated fuel selector button located below the driver-side air vent. Cabin features will stay largely the same depending on the trim, while exterior teasers have pointed to a body-coloured front grille, LED lighting, and a panoramic sunroof.
Market Impact
This twin-cylinder setup places the tanks beneath the boot floor to save luggage space, mirroring solutions seen on competitors like the Tata Nexon i-CNG. Analysts expect the CNG model to cost roughly Rs 1 lakh more than the standard petrol version, with a starting price under Rs 10 lakh. Beyond boosting sales during the festive season, the new option will help Mahindra meet stricter CAFE III emission rules arriving in April 2027 by offsetting emissions from its popular diesel vehicles.
Context
Automakers in India are expanding factory-fitted CNG line-ups to meet rising demand for lower running costs and stricter fuel efficiency mandates. Mahindra's introduction of a twin-cylinder configuration addresses a practical drawback of older CNG systems that used to consume nearly all available boot space.
