Supreme Court Justice Ujjal Bhuyan warned that removing millions of voters from the electoral rolls would be fatal to the Constitution. He made the comment on Sunday, 4 October 2026, while speaking at NALSAR University in Hyderabad. Bhuyan said any process that disenfranchises large numbers of citizens creates a class of second‑class residents denied the right to vote. He called such action intrinsically arbitrary and a violation of universal adult suffrage and the right to equality. The judge added that no amount of what‑aboutery can justify mass exclusion from the rolls. His remarks highlight concerns that large‑scale voter removal could undermine democratic order.
Context
The Indian Constitution guarantees every adult citizen the right to vote, and any large‑scale removal of names from the electoral list challenges that core principle.
