Congress and BJP-JD(S) candidates filed their nomination papers for the Legislative Council's North-East Teachers' constituency at the Mini Vidhana Soudha in Kalaburagi on Monday, October 16, 2026, turning the routine process into a display of party strength. BJP-JD(S) nominee Shashil G. Namoshi submitted his papers before Returning Officer Zaheera Naseem, flanked by former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and senior BJP figures including former minister Bandeppa Kashempur and former MP Umesh Jadhav. Congress contender Sharanappa Mattur also handed in his nomination to Ms. Naseem, accompanied by Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil, local leader Radhakrishna Doddamani, Kalaburagi MP and MLAs Allamprabhu Patil and Kaneez Fatima, along with other party workers. The presence of senior leaders underscored the importance each alliance places on the seat. Party workers raised slogans and gathered in large numbers, turning the filing into a show of organisational strength. The hall was packed with supporters chanting slogans, showing that both sides are mobilising the teaching community ahead of the poll slated for October 23. Analysts expect the contest to be closely watched across the state. ## Context Teachers' seats in Karnataka's Legislative Council are elected by registered teachers, so parties vie for their backing to win the limited seats available in the region.
