U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet senior Indian officials in Mumbai next week, a plan that sparked criticism from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Gandhi said officials in the Ministry of External Affairs seemed uncertain about the arrangement and suggested Prime Minister Narendra Modi should clarify the matter. In a post on X, Gandhi warned that the ministry appeared confused and hinted the prime minister might need to step in. The government and the BJP have not responded to Gandhi’s remarks. U.S. envoy Sergio Gor, speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum, confirmed Rubio’s itinerary and said he expects Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar to attend the Mumbai meeting along with other officials from Delhi. Congress general secretary for communications Jairam Ramesh had earlier criticized the lack of an official MEA statement, questioning why a foreign envoy was providing details about the minister’s schedule. Rubio’s visit will begin with a stop in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, before arriving in India, where he will travel to Mumbai and then to the Reliance unit in Jamnagar, Gujarat, between October 17 and October 22.
Context
High‑level diplomatic visits between the United States and India are routine, and the Ministry of External Affairs typically announces any meetings involving the foreign minister. This visit follows ongoing efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation across trade and strategic sectors.
