Rival political workers clashed in Andhra Pradesh's Annamayya district during nomination filings for upcoming local body elections, resulting in stone pelting and vehicle vandalism in Punganur town.

What Happened

Workers from the ruling Telugu Desam Party and the opposition YSR Congress Party confronted each other when supporters from both sides reached the nomination office at the same time. YSRCP Lok Sabha Floor Leader and Rajampet MP P V Midhun Reddy stated that his convoy was attacked by TDP workers using sticks, iron rods, and stones while he accompanied candidates to file their papers. The MP sustained injuries in the incident. According to the YSRCP, opponents blocked their vehicles and tried to stop candidates from reaching the centre, while police present at the scene failed to stop the attackers.

Reactions

YSRCP General Secretary Gadikota Sreekanth Reddy described the incident as an attempt to murder and accused the state government of using violence to silence opposition candidates and disrupt elections. The party demanded that the State Election Commission step in immediately, register criminal cases, arrest those responsible, and take action against negligent officers while providing safe passage for candidates to file nominations. Meanwhile, police maintained that supporters of both parties attacked each other and that law enforcement quickly moved in to restore order.

Context

Local body elections in India often see intense political rivalry and friction during the nomination phase as parties vie for grassroots influence. State election commissions hold the responsibility of ensuring free and fair polling processes by deploying security personnel and handling complaints of electoral malpractice.
