Public Land in Mumbai Diverted for Luxury Apartments

Public land in Mumbai that was used by Sion Hospital for over 25 years has been taken over to build a luxury apartment tower. Santosh Karmarkar, a paediatric surgeon and social activist based in Mumbai, states that this conversion prioritises the luxury of a few over the lives of millions.
Land Issues
For decades, public land in the city has been converted into private luxury residences, skyscrapers, and luxury malls while chawls providing low-income housing have disappeared. Mill lands, gardens, recreational plots, and prime land near railway stations have been handed over to builders instead of being used for public benefits like station and bus terminal expansion, or Port Trust land leased to billionaires. A prime plot near the Sea Link bridge was recently walled off by a realty company owned by one of India's richest billionaires.
Hospital Strain
Sion Hospital urgently requires more space for outpatient and inpatient care, its medical college, student activities, parking, and patient rehabilitation. Ward conditions resemble war zones due to massive demand for indoor beds, leading to overcrowded corridors, two patients sharing a single bed, and cluttered medical equipment. One of the alleged builders involved in taking over the hospital's land plot is the Guardian Minister for Mumbai.
Context
Public healthcare facilities in major Indian cities frequently face severe infrastructure strains and space deficits due to rising urban populations. Converting publicly owned urban land for private commercial or residential real estate projects remains a central point of debate concerning city planning and civic welfare.
