Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda has set October 31 as the final deadline to finish installing and replacing LED streetlights across the city. During a virtual meeting on Friday, Mr. Gowda told officials to personally check the streetlights on the ground instead of trusting paperwork alone. Contractors will face fines if the new lights are not put up properly or stop working.
Action and Fines
The Greater Bengaluru Authority has already fined contractors a total of ₹93.67 lakh for poor streetlight maintenance. Officials must replace old sodium-vapour streetlights with new LED lights in the East City Corporation area. These strict orders follow three months of reviews. Minister Gowda previously checked the J.P. Nagar to Bannerghatta NICE Road stretch on September 18 and scolded officials after finding many lights broken.
Complaints and Control
Daily complaints about broken lights on the Sahaaya 2.0 app dropped from 293 in June to 235 in October. From September 1 to October 15, citizens filed 8,186 complaints, and workers fixed 6,765 of them. Mr. Gowda also ordered officials to share constituency-wise timelines for the Centralised Control and Monitoring System, which will automate streetlight tracking. Four new control rooms will open across the city corporations by October 31.
Context
Streetlight upgrades are a common part of urban development projects in Indian cities aimed at cutting power use and improving public safety at night. Automated monitoring systems help civic bodies fix broken infrastructure faster without waiting for manual public complaints.
