State Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta has ordered police officers to finish all necessary preparations before the notification for upcoming local body elections is released. Reviewing a regional preparedness meeting in Guntur on Tuesday, he stressed that officers must ensure the polls are conducted in a peaceful, transparent and impartial way.
Official Meetings
Several senior police officials attended the conference hall meeting, including ADGP for Law and Order N. Madhusudhana Reddy, Guntur Range IGP Sarvashresta Tripathi, and DIG Fakkeerappa Kaginelli. The DGP reviewed arrangements across six districts, which included Guntur, Palnadu, Bapatla, Prakasam, Markapuram and Nellore. He pointed out that since the election process will wrap up quickly after the official notification, all groundwork must be finished in advance.
Security Plans
Mr. Gupta instructed teams to map out sensitive and hyper-sensitive villages and polling stations by looking at past election incidents. Officers must take preventive steps against suspects, rowdy-sheeters and trouble-makers. The plans include tighter checks against illegal cash, illicit liquor, and unauthorized transport, alongside a review of old cases from faction-heavy villages during 2021 and 2024. IGP Tripathi added that officers should conduct cordon searches for illegal weapons, monitor provocative social media posts, and bind over troublemakers. Officials also received instructions to watch out for fake news and clear up rumors quickly.
Context
Local body elections in India are administrative polls held to choose representatives for rural and urban local government bodies like village councils and municipalities. State police departments routinely hold high-level security reviews ahead of major elections to deploy forces effectively and prevent local violence.
