The Press Council of India has released new rules for reporters covering protests and demonstrations. The council adopted these guidelines at a meeting on October 14, and released them in a press statement on October 15.

Safety and ID

Reporters must carry valid identity cards from their media companies, the Press Information Bureau, or the Directorate of Information and Publicity. They need to keep these IDs visible while securing lanyards so they do not get caught in crowds. The council advises workers to keep a safe distance from fights and police action, and avoid putting cameras on police barriers or vehicles. Reporters should also carry an emergency bag with first aid, water, snacks, a torch, eye protection, and a towel, while avoiding hot tear-gas shells.

Neutrality and Ethics

Journalists must stay neutral and avoid joining protests, taking sides, or picking fights with protesters or police. News teams must check facts from multiple sources and test claims from all sides equally. They should separate real facts from opinions and keep the names of minors and injured people private.
