The upcoming film Doosra has received an adult certification from the Central Board of Film Certification after its director opted to avoid any edits. Filmmaker Abhinay Deo stated that he preferred an adult rating rather than removing three specific scenes that the board wanted trimmed. The movie connects the historic 2002 NatWest Series cricket final won by India under Sourav Ganguly with the fictional story of a young girl named Tara growing up in Rajasthan.

Censor Board Details

During the screening process, the censor board offered a U/A rating on the condition that three portions were cut. The director agreed to take an adult certificate instead because the board promised to leave every single shot untouched in return. One of the retained sequences shows the young protagonist being discovered by her father, played by Ankur Vikal, while looking at an adult publication. This specific sequence includes a brief, two-second display of a nude photo that usually faces strict censorship. Another scene the board wanted altered contained a reference to the Babri Masjid event, but the director refused to change it.

Release Plans

When asked about missing out on teenage viewers due to the adult rating, the filmmaker noted that the movie is relevant to young people even if it is not specifically meant for them to watch. The film features Plabita Borthakur in the role of Tara and is set to arrive in theatres on October 23.

Context

India's Central Board of Film Certification routinely requires edits or gives restrictive ratings to films containing nudity or sensitive historical references. Directors frequently have to choose between altering their artistic vision or accepting an adult rating that restricts younger audiences from entering theatres.
