Actor Kubbra Sait and filmmaker Abhinay Deo have shared their reactions after a notice was issued instructing actor Imran Khan to leave India by October 28. The notice follows Imran's brief detention for joining a protest at Mumbai's August Kranti Maidan. Protesters gathered to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over revisions to voter lists.
Reactions
Abhinay Deo, who directed Imran in the 2011 film Delhi Belly, spoke to ANI about the controversy. He stated that what he thinks does not matter and urged the public to leave Imran alone instead of commenting on his situation. Abhinay described the actor as an incredible person, a very nice human being, and a passionate man. When asked about Imran's American citizenship, the filmmaker said he did not know or care about it, adding that people should respect others and their personal decisions. Meanwhile, Kubbra Sait posted a sarcastic video on Instagram regarding the situation. She noted that the protest took place at August Kranti Maidan, a location tied to the Quit India Movement. She added that young people are questioning the Election Commission over the new voters' list and that a thousand people were detained for asking questions.
Context
Imran holds an Overseas Citizen of India card and US citizenship, but OCI status does not grant Indian citizenship, voting rights, or the right to contest elections. The notice asking him to leave the country was issued by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office under the Immigration and Foreigners Act following a complaint by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya. The actor recently made a brief return to the film industry in his uncle Aamir Khan's production Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos after a long absence.
