Police arrested several BJP Mahila Morcha activists who tried to force their way into a Congress headquarters in Belagavi during a rally on Monday. The protest targeted Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, who is currently facing sexual‑harassment charges filed by eleven female students. Protesters said the MP, a former JNU professor, is being shielded by Congress leaders despite the complaints. They accused the party of applying a double standard when it comes to women’s safety and demanded a clear stance from its leadership. The rally featured BJP Mahila Morcha state secretary Sonali Sarnobat along with Shilpa Kekare, Ujwala Badavanache, Sunita Patil, other office bearers, activists and BJP Yuva Morcha workers. Demonstrators called for an unbiased inquiry into the allegations and for the legal process to be respected. They reminded the Congress of its own slogan “Ladki Hoon, Lad Sakti Hoon” and urged the party to prove its commitment to protecting women.
Context
The incident reflects ongoing tensions between political parties in India over handling of sexual‑harassment claims, a subject that has gained national attention after several high‑profile cases in recent years.
