UPDATE - follow-up to Bangladesh PM assures minorities of equal rights, security: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman stated that his government aims to protect the rights and safety of every citizen regardless of religion. He met with Hindu community leaders at his office in the secretariat on Monday, October 12, 2026, as reported by the BSS news agency. Mr. Rahman noted that protecting everyone is his duty as head of government and that he will try his best to fulfill it.

Security Measures

These comments arrive while people worry about minority safety and the protection of places of worship and gatherings. Hindus make up eight percent of the country's population according to the 2022 census. Police have set up strict security across nearly 33,000 Durga Puja locations ahead of the major festival running from October 16 to 20, 2026. The security plan includes round-the-clock watch, special police units, drones, and helicopters for idol immersion.

Context

Durga Puja is the largest religious festival for the Hindu minority in Bangladesh. Past years have seen attacks on temples and properties during festivals, leading to demands for better safety measures.
