The tragedy unfolded after a brief rain shower caused a large crowd to seek shelter at the exit gate, compounded by a misleading announcement claiming the pandal had collapsed, which sparked a frantic rush. Most of the dead and injured are women and children.

Relief and Investigation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex gratia of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured from the PMNRF. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a higher state compensation of ₹25 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased person, along with a government job for one family member and ₹5 lakh for the injured. Chief Minister Adhikari stated that authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the night of the accident and promised action against those who failed to control the crowd. He also announced plans to write to the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court to appoint a sitting judge to head a Special Investigation Team to probe the incident. The pandal has been shut for visitors.
