Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has faced 14 protests and agitations during his tenure from December 2023 to October 2026, leading to repeated policy reversals and negotiations. Tensions rose recently when Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan intervened in a dispute regarding the demolition of homes of 12 tribal families in Sehore. Chouhan met the affected families, criticized local officials, and put forward demands at a late-night meeting called by Yadav, pressing for an inquiry and compensation.

Recent Protests

The tribal families had begun a march toward Bhopal after a five-day sit-in, demanding land titles, home and crop compensation, rehabilitation, and action against officials. Yadav agreed to address these demands, ordered an inquiry, and assured the delegation of a resolution, prompting the protesters to call off their march. Other notable agitations during Yadav's tenure include a massive campaign against the proposed re-densification of Shivaji Nagar and Tulsi Nagar in Bhopal, where residents, environmentalists, and students opposed a plan that threatened over 27,000 trees. The government eventually scrapped that urban-planning proposal. Similarly, thousands of guest teachers gathered in Bhopal to demand better service conditions and job security. The School Education Department subsequently agreed to eight demands, including a 10-month service contract and protection against mid-session removal. MPPSC candidates also staged prolonged protests in Indore over recruitment delays and examination processes, which ended after discussions with the district administration and a meeting with Yadav. Farmers affected by the Indore Outer Ring Road project protested land acquisition and survey decisions, suspending their stir after the administration halted the survey and offered assurances regarding compensation and access roads. Tribal residents also protested the proposed Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Wildlife Sanctuary in Sehore over fears of losing their homes and livelihoods, leading the state government to put the process on hold, order an inquiry, and transfer a divisional forest officer. Additionally, preparations for the 2028 Simhastha Kumbh Mela in Ujjain sparked a confrontation with farmers over a land-pooling scheme. The Bharatiya Kisan Sangh opposed the plan, and the government ultimately withdrew four proposed town-development schemes after the protests. Private bus operators also threatened a statewide strike over passenger-bus taxes and permit system changes, resulting in two key proposed notifications being put on hold following discussions.

Context

While the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh is traditionally known for pushing through tough decisions without bending under public pressure, the frequent concessions under the current leadership have drawn varied reactions. Several BJP functionaries have described the administration as being on the backfoot during these agitations. In contrast, officials from the Chief Minister's Office maintain that the government simply listens to legitimate public demands and acts in the best interest of the citizens.
