Authorities found unhygienic conditions, missing medical certificates, and labelling errors during a two-day state-wide inspection drive on October 15 and 16. The Food Safety Wing of the Department of Food Safety and Drug Administration checked sweet manufacturing units and sales shops across Karnataka.
Action Taken
Officers served notices to 25 establishments during the drive, including Agarwal Sweets in Kalaburagi, Kanti Sweets in Madikeri, Asha Sweets in Bengaluru's J.P. Nagar, and Sri Durga Sweets in Gangavathi. Other shops facing notices include Sangam Sweets in HBR Layout and Bansuri Sweets in Vijayanagar, alongside units in Raichur, Kolar, Koppal, and Mysuru Rural. Two operators in Kolar district received fines of ₹2,000 and ₹5,000.
Samples Collected
On Friday, which was the second day of the inspections, officials visited 90 sweet manufacturing units and sales outlets. They collected 145 food samples to send for lab analysis.
Context
Food safety departments carry out special surprise checks during festive seasons when the demand for sweets rises sharply across the state. Such checks aim to protect public health by stopping the sale of sub-standard or contaminated food items.
