Training Programme Details
The Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University is stepping up dog handler training to match a growing pet population in the state. The second batch of its Certified Professional Dog Training Programme begins on November 9 at the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in Mannuthy, Thrissur. The six-week course spans obedience, grooming, scent detection, tracking, canine behaviour, body language, safe handling, restraint, kennel management, first aid, and animal welfare laws. Students who pass the final test get a university certificate.
Behaviour and Stray Control
Behavioural issues like excessive barking, aggression, and trouble fitting into homes often lead to pet abandonment, which feeds into the state's stray dog problem and rabies control work. Dog bites also happen at home with familiar pets, and children often miss warning signs. University registrar Sabin George noted that the course focuses on science-based methods like positive reinforcement and early socialisation to cut down fear-based aggression. Mr. George also pointed out that the state lacks many formally qualified trainers, as most learn through apprenticeships.
Working Dogs and Admission
Properly trained dogs help families and assist in search-and-rescue tasks. Police search and cadaver dogs helped find bodies at Pettimudi, the Wayanad disaster in Mundakkai and Chooralmala, and a collapsed tunnel in Telangana last year. Applicants need a Class X pass. Students can bring a vaccinated puppy aged three to five months or join without one. The course costs ₹40,000, which covers meals, a training kit, and care for the puppy. Applications close on October 31.
Context
Professional animal handling courses help bridge the gap between pet owners and expert trainers, promoting responsible pet care. Training young puppies prevents behavioral issues that often result in abandonment.
