Tesla has launched the new Model Y L in India, a long-wheelbase, six-seat version of its popular electric SUV priced at Rs 61.99 lakh ex-showroom. The new variant costs Rs 11.10 lakh more than the standard rear-wheel-drive Model Y and comes in higher than market rivals like the BMW iX1 LWB and the BYD Sealion 7.
Cabin And Space
The Model Y L features a wheelbase of 3,040mm, stretching 150mm longer between the axles than the standard model while standing 40mm taller. Inside, the six-seater layout includes front seats with extended under-thigh support and individual middle-row captain's chairs that offer heating, cooling, powered armrests, and an 8-inch entertainment touchscreen. The third row provides adequate space for adults along with dedicated air vents and charging ports. Boot capacity stands at 420 litres with all seats upright, expanding to 1,076 litres with the rear seats folded, alongside a 117-litre front trunk.
Features And Performance
A massive 16-inch touchscreen dominates the minimalist dashboard, integrating a Grok AI assistant that handles climate controls, navigation, and charger searches. Additional amenities include an 18-speaker audio system, dual wireless chargers, panoramic glass roof, and nine airbags. Unlike the single-motor standard Model Y, this dual-motor variant delivers all-wheel drive with an estimated output of 514 horsepower and 590Nm of torque, hitting zero to 100 kph in 4.5 seconds. Tesla claims a WLTP driving range of 681km from its estimated 88kWh battery pack, supporting DC fast charging up to 250kW.
Drawbacks
Drawbacks include a large turning circle that complicates tight-space parking and a low unladen ground clearance of 166mm that requires caution over tall speed breakers. The cabin relies heavily on the touchscreen with minimal physical buttons, while the expansive glass roof lacks physical sunblinds, causing the interior to heat up quickly under direct sunlight.
Context
Tesla continues to expand its vehicle lineup globally by introducing larger, family-oriented variants designed to appeal to buyers seeking extended cabin space and dual-motor performance. The Indian electric vehicle market has seen growing interest in luxury electric SUVs, prompting manufacturers to introduce long-wheelbase configurations to compete directly with established luxury brands.
