England start their subcontinental ODI tri-series against Pakistan in Rawalpindi following a recent series victory over Sri Lanka on September 27. The matches form the beginning of a busy winter schedule that includes a white-ball tour of Australia, Test trips to South Africa and Bangladesh, and a return to Australia for the 150th-anniversary Test match in March.

Spin And Squad Selections

Adil Rashid continues as the primary white-ball spinner alongside all-rounders Will Jacks and Liam Dawson, while Test spin remains a challenge with Dan Lawrence as first choice and Shoaib Bashir playing two Tests in the past year. The white-ball games give younger spinners Jacks, James Coles, and recalled spinner Mason Crane an opportunity to push for Test squad places for the South African tour starting December 17. Harry Brook captains the squad, which also features Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker, Tom Banton, Jordan Cox, Henry Crocombe, Sam Curran, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Joe Root, and Josh Tongue. Crane aims for his first appearance since 2018 and seeks to become Rashid's leg-spin backup and long-term successor after advancing past Rehan Ahmed.

Crocombe And Duckett

Seam bowler Henry Crocombe received a two-year central contract despite not making a senior appearance for his country yet. The 25-year-old moves to Surrey from Sussex before the 2027 domestic season and claimed 125 wickets in 51 matches, including consecutive hat-trips against Somerset and Essex. He holds 49 wickets in 36 fifty-over matches and is set for a T20I debut in Australia in November. Meanwhile, Ben Duckett missed out on a two-year contract extension though his current deal lasts until 2027. Duckett faces pressure on his opening spot from returning player Jacob Bethell and Tom Banton after scoring a top score of 31 against South Africa and 11 against New Zealand in late 2025, alongside a Test average of 23.42 over his last 11 Tests.

Curran And Team Form

Sam Curran has not played a Test match in over five years, but Ben Stokes's international retirement opens a potential pace-bowling all-rounder spot. Curran missed the red-ball series against Pakistan due to a groin injury that ended his home summer early. England enter the tri-series alongside Pakistan and Sri Lanka after recent series victories in Sri Lanka and at home against India, plus a deciding win over Sri Lanka at The Kia Oval last month.

Context

International cricket schedules frequently require teams to transition rapidly between white-ball and red-ball formats across different global venues. Performance in limited-overs fixtures often influences selection decisions for upcoming Test series as teams evaluate player versatility.
