Former Australia opening batter David Warner has strongly criticised the very low crowd numbers seen during the current Test series against South Africa, describing the attendance figures as pathetic on social media. South Africa were defeated by 214 runs in the opening Test in Durban, where large parts of the Kingsmead stadium remained empty throughout the five days. Total ticket sales reached just under 20,000 spectators across the entire match, filling less than a fifth of the ground's capacity. Viewer numbers have stayed low during the opening two rain-disrupted days of the second Test match held in Gqeberha. Warner questioned how anyone can call the format the pinnacle of the sport when supporters fail to show up.
Reactions And Review
Former England captains Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain also raised concerns regarding the sparse crowds. Atherton noted that the match featured the top two ranked teams globally and marked South Africa's first home Test since winning the World Test championship, making the low turnout particularly surprising. Hussain pointed out that early stumps called due to poor lighting also detract greatly from the live match experience for paying fans. The KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union, led by Chief Executive Officer Heinrich Strydom, stated they will conduct a comprehensive internal review to understand why people chose to stay away and how to improve future match-day experiences.
Context
Test cricket attendance in nations outside the traditional powerhouses has faced ongoing challenges in recent years due to weekday matches and competing entertainment options. Sports boards frequently study ticket sales patterns to find better ways of attracting families and younger fans back to traditional venues.
