British carmaker McLaren plans to drop its GTS and Artura models by the end of 2028 to make space for a brand-new vehicle lineup that includes the company's first-ever SUV.

The GTS and Artura

The GTS arrived in December 2023 as an updated version of the McLaren GT. It uses a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that makes 635hp and 630Nm of torque to compete with the Ferrari Amalfi and Aston Martin DB12. This car will be the first of the core models to go, possibly in 2027. The Artura will follow it out by the end of 2028. The Artura has a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 engine paired with an electric motor for a total output of 700hp and 720Nm. It acts as a rival to the Ferrari 296 and first appeared globally in February 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused chip shortages and supply chain problems that slowed down its development.

Lineup Changes

The 750S is the successor to the 720S and stands as another core model, but it could also exit in 2027 because the limited-run 788HS serves as the final version of this supercar. Even so, the brand will still build rear-engine supercars while expanding its choices. McLaren will build its own power units for the upcoming vehicles. McLaren Chief Operating Officer Michael Straughan stated that the company will not just make rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive cars anymore. He added that future models could feature front-engine layouts with four-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive, and they will not stay limited to V6 and V8 engines.

New Vehicles Ahead

A new supercar is set to debut by 2028, though the company has not confirmed if it will replace the Artura or join as a brand-new model. Reports from Automotive News based on inside sources say it will use a twin-turbo V6 hybrid system that makes 1,085Nm of torque. The front-engine platform built for the upcoming SUV might also be used in other future vehicles, such as a four-seat grand tourer.
