Disney+ and Hulu will launch the six‑part Japanese supernatural anthology ‘Night Tales Club’ in January 2027. The series is built by seven filmmakers, including Kurosawa Kiyoshi, known for “Cure” and “Wife of a Spy”, and Shimizu Takashi, famed for “Ju‑on” and “The Inugami Family”. Yamada Takayuki stars as Hojo, a high‑flying businessman obsessed with the unexplained who acts as the show’s storyteller. Hojo declares that ghosts, curses and other paranormal events are “bugs” in reality and offers JPY 20 million in gold to anyone who can present a personal supernatural encounter with proof. Six such accounts, each drawn from a different tale in author Sawamura Ichi’s collection of short horror stories, form the six episodes. Sawamura, who also adapted the material for the screen, said he feels “an enormous sense of surprise and joy that they will soon be available on screen to scare audiences around the world.” The directing duties are split: Kurosawa and Shimizu each handle one episode, while Katayama Shinzo, Sode Yukiko, Sakashita Yuichiro and Nakamura Yosuke each direct another. Nakajima Kenji directs the Hojo sequences. The series joins Disney+’s growing roster of Japanese titles such as “Gannibal”, “Land of Tanabata”, the romantic comedy “Merry Berry Love” and the variety show “The One Shot”.
Context
