Financial consultant and social media creator V Harish was found dead on Monday night at a rented villa near Muttukadu, outside Chennai. The 27-year-old from Puducherry ran the popular online channel "Finance with Harish" and had built an audience of over one million people over five years. Police are investigating his death by suicide alongside his family's complaints of sustained online harassment.

Family Allegations

The victim's father, J Vinayagam, filed a police complaint stating that another social media influencer, Jason Samuel, subjected his son to a campaign of defamatory posts, threats, and cyberbullying. According to the complaint, Harish recorded a video before his death blaming Samuel for his decision and stating that Samuel threatened to block all his social media accounts and stop him from opening new ones.

Accusations and Counter-Claims

Samuel published posts and videos on October 18 accusing Harish of misleading the public and offering financial services without proper registration. Samuel claimed that Harish lacked a Registered Investment Adviser licence from the Securities and Exchange Board of India and misrepresented his registration with the Association of Mutual Funds in India. In a social media statement, Samuel denied cyberbullying, expressed shock over the death, and stated he only meant to question Harish's credentials.

Police Investigation

Police sources confirmed that Harish's established social media accounts were blocked in September after being mass-reported, and a replacement channel was also taken down. Kanathur police registered a case of unnatural death, moved the body to Chengalpattu Government Hospital for an autopsy, and are examining digital evidence and statements from both sides.

Context

Online creators who discuss money matters face strict oversight under Indian regulations to protect ordinary investors from unverified tips. Cyberbullying complaints involving digital platforms and social media blocking have become a growing area of police scrutiny in recent years.
