Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal publicly scolded veteran singer Daler Mehndi at a cultural event in Uttarakhand, accusing him of being intoxicated and only lip-syncing despite receiving a payment of thirty-five lakh rupees. The incident drew sharp reactions from across the entertainment world, with Mika Singh, Kapil Sharma, Palash Sen, Alisha Chinai, Harshdeep Kaur, and Badshah stepping forward to support the singer. Actor Anupam Kher also defended the artist, stating that he has known Daler for twenty-five to thirty years and believes the singer does not consume alcohol. Anupam mentioned that Daler has not been keeping well recently and argued that even if the performance fell short, the minister should not have humiliated him on stage in front of an open audience.

Sona's Stance

Singer Sona Mohapatra offered a different perspective, recalling how she watched Daler perform at the Sufi Heritage Festival in Delhi on the first of March earlier this year. Sona stated that the veteran artist appeared disoriented, struggled to hit notes, and repeated musical phrases, which led audience members who paid for tickets to leave early. She questioned whether silence out of respect is actually helpful, emphasizing that artists also carry a professional duty toward paying audiences and organizers.

Context

Public disagreements between performing artists, organizers, and public officials often spark wide discussions about accountability, live event standards, and the line between personal health issues and professional commitments. Such controversies regularly divide public opinion between those who defend a veteran's legacy and those who stress the expectations of paying audiences.
