The Controversy
Uttarakhand cabinet minister Subodh Uniyal has sparked widespread debate following a live performance by Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi at the Maa Kunjapuri Mela cultural evening in Narendra Nagar, Tehri. Audience members grew angry over suspicions that the singer was lip-syncing instead of singing live during the event. Uniyal, serving as both a local representative and the fair committee president, intervened on stage after an hour of the performance as public frustration mounted. He told the anchor that the audience came to hear Mehndi rather than his backing team, noting that the setup felt fully automatic with artists merely moving their hands.
Minister's Stance and Bollywood Support
Minister Uniyal stated that Mehndi had already been paid thirty-five lakh rupees in advance, alongside hotel expenses, and argued that if the artist was unwell, he should have stayed home or informed the public beforehand. While Uniyal remarked publicly that he could not perform a medical examination to determine the exact nature of any intoxication, his comments drew sharp reactions from the film and music fraternity. According to India TV Hindi, singer Mika Singh, actor Anupam Kher, and actor Rajpal Yadav have all come out in support of Mehndi. Yadav defended the singer by stating on Instagram that Mehndi does not consume alcohol, that they worked together on the film 'Welcome to the Jungle', and that the singer has been unwell lately while criticizing the minister for treating art as if it could be purchased.
Context
Public events featuring high-profile entertainment often draw intense public scrutiny when attendees feel they are not receiving the live experience they paid for. Cultural festivals managed by local committees regularly balance public expectations of artists with the realities of performers' health and scheduling pressures. Political figures involved in organizing such public gatherings frequently find themselves mediating between dissatisfied crowds and visiting performers.
