Voters in the Canadian province of Alberta overwhelmingly chose to remain in the country during a non-binding referendum, dealing a blow to a rising separatist movement and giving Prime Minister Mark Carney a major political relief. With more than ninety percent of votes counted by Wednesday morning, over seventy-five percent of the ballots supported staying a province of Canada rather than starting a legal process toward a future separation vote.

Reactions

Prime Minister Carney, who comes from Alberta, told parliament that he was thrilled with the outcome and called it a large majority for Canada. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, who called the vote amid pressure from within her United Conservative Party while personally supporting unity, called the outcome a vote for a stronger Alberta in a united Canada. Meanwhile, separatist leaders noted that roughly a quarter of voters backed their cause, marking a sharp rise from past support levels.

Context

Alberta holds the world's fourth-largest proven oil reserves and accounts for the vast majority of Canada's crude oil production. Economic grievances and environmental policies from the federal capital have historically fueled regional tensions in the province.
