State Bank of India (SBI) has discovered personal information of 3,897 customers inside a collection of roughly 375,000 records sourced from the dark web. Preliminary analysis flagged these records as containing names, account numbers and other sensitive data. SBI said a detailed investigation is required to verify the authenticity and completeness of the exposed data, to pinpoint how the information may have been leaked, and to measure the risk to both customers and the bank. The bank will also assess the extent of the exposure and identify any further vulnerabilities that could affect its operations.
Context
Data breaches on the dark web are a growing threat for financial institutions, prompting banks to constantly monitor illicit online markets. Verifying the legitimacy of such leaks helps banks decide whether to alert affected customers and tighten security measures.
