Photo: Openverse - wikimediaThe Indian rupee rose 29 paise to 94.62 against the U.S. dollar in early trade on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. This uptick came from positive local market moods and steps taken by the Reserve Bank of India to slow down dollar demand. Foreign dollar inflows tied to the Jio initial public offering, which opened for public subscription on the same day, also pushed the currency higher.
Market Details
At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened stronger at 94.78 before climbing to 94.62. On Monday, October 19, the rupee had closed lower by 2 paise at 94.91, while the market stayed closed on Tuesday, October 20, for Dussehra. High crude oil prices and a strong U.S. dollar kept the gains in check. Aamir Makda, a commodity and currency analyst at Choice Broking, noted that foreign investors are using sell/buy swaps to handle dollar flows during the public offer allotment window. Meanwhile, the dollar index traded up 0.06 percent at 101.58, and Brent crude futures rose 1.42 percent to $110.33 per barrel. In stock trading, the Sensex jumped 665.10 points to 74,518, and the Nifty went up 188.40 points to 23,077.35, even though foreign institutional investors sold equities worth ₹1,148.64 crore on a net basis on Monday.
Context
A public stock offering by a major corporate entity often draws large sums of money from overseas investors, which directly increases demand for local currency as foreign funds flow into the country. At the same time, central banks regularly monitor and intervene in currency markets to prevent sharp or sudden swings in exchange rates.
