Medical experts warn that obstructive sleep apnea could pose hidden risks to liver health over time. Dr Kasturi Baruah, a hemato-oncologist at M|O|C Cancer Care in Mumbai, explains that the sleep disorder involves the upper respiratory tract narrowing during sleep. This causes repeated breathing pauses and low oxygen levels in the body.

Liver Impact

These nighttime drops in oxygen can trigger inflammation and alter fat metabolism and insulin sensitivity. Such changes are closely tied to fatty liver disease. The condition now known as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease happens when extra fat builds up in the liver alongside metabolic issues. While it affects people differently, it can sometimes lead to scarring or advanced liver damage.

Symptoms and Care

Doctors advise patients not to dismiss loud snoring, disturbed sleep, and constant tiredness as mere signs of a busy routine. Warning signs that need medical attention include choking sensations at night, breathing pauses noticed by others, and severe daytime sleepiness. A physician may suggest a sleep test for diagnosis and check liver status when metabolic risks are present. Treatment methods range from weight loss, exercise, and balanced diets to blood sugar regulation and CPAP therapy.

Context

Obstructive sleep apnea is increasingly recognized by doctors as a whole-body health issue rather than just a simple sleeping problem. When combined with conditions like obesity or diabetes, it can strain vital organs like the liver by disrupting normal metabolic processes.
