Five unused life‑support devices at Kozhikode Government Medical College were restored by a joint team of medical and engineering students on Sunday.

What Happened

The ventilator, infusion pump, multi‑parameter monitor, ECG machine and nebulizer, all out of service, were repaired during a ‘Repair Café’ organized by the Kerala Startup Mission Innovation & Entrepreneurship Development Centre (IEDC) unit and the engineering club Tinker Space. The event marked the first time this model has been run in a state government medical college.

Reaction

Dr. M.P. Shrijayan, superintendent of the college hospital, said the effort shows how new technical ideas can help health workers and called the collaboration a model activity. Nodal officers Dr. Rojith K. Balakrishnan and Dr. Trinet D’couth, student nodal officer Dr. Siddharth Narayanan, Shishir O. Raghavan and Tinker Space representative Jasim led the repair work.

Context

Such student‑led repairs can reduce equipment downtime and cut costs for hospitals that often face budget constraints. The organizers plan to expand the programme to other government medical colleges in Kerala.
