Essar Ports has won a major port project in Gujarat to build a new cargo terminal at Tuna Tekra in Kandla. The company received a Letter of Award from the Deendayal Port Authority for this project.
Project Details
The new terminal will cost an estimated 2,276.06 crore rupees and will be built under a public-private partnership model. Essar Ports will put in 1,552.57 crore rupees, while the port authority will invest 723.49 crore rupees. The terminal will handle 18.33 million tonnes of cargo every year and will feature four berths with a total length of 1,200 metres. It can handle very large ships of up to 170,000 deadweight tonnes. Ashish Rajgarhia, CEO of Essar Ports, said this project is a big moment for the company to grow its ports business again. Essar Ports currently has a total operational capacity of around 60 million tonnes per year across Gujarat, Indonesia, and the United Kingdom.
Context
Public-private partnerships help governments build large infrastructure projects faster by using private money and expertise. Ports play a vital role in national trade by allowing large ships to load and unload goods efficiently.
