King Charles has called the 1966 Aberfan disaster the most tragic of days imaginable as the village marked its 60th anniversary. A massive wall of coal slurry collapsed from a colliery spoil tip on October 21, 1966, sending 150,000 tonnes of mining debris down the hillside into south Wales. Pantglas Junior School and nearby houses were engulfed, resulting in the deaths of 116 children and 28 adults.
Memorials and Royal Visit
King Charles III, Queen Camilla, and the Prince of Wales visited the Aberfan Memorial Garden on Wednesday. They laid wreaths alongside the last surviving teacher from the school and met survivors, bereaved families, and retired emergency workers. First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth also greeted crowds, while a minute of silence was observed at 09:15 BST on Friday with church bells ringing 144 times.
Official Blame and Injustice
A 1967 official inquiry found the National Coal Board responsible for the tragedy. However, no one has ever faced prosecution. Professor Iain McLean questioned the failure to sack National Coal Board chairman Lord Robens, despite complaints and a 1963 petition from the school. Survivors also faced injustices, including money being taken from the public disaster fund to clear remaining tips.
Context
Colliery spoil tips were common features of the mining landscape in industrial Britain during the peak of the coal era. The disaster fundamentally changed public safety regulations regarding industrial waste management near populated areas. Communities continue to remember such historical industrial accidents to honour the lives lost and support aging survivors.
