King Charles has called the Aberfan disaster the most tragic of days imaginable as the village marked its sixtieth anniversary.
What Happened
One hundred sixteen children and twenty-eight adults died when a colliery spoil tip collapsed on October 21, 1966. Pantglas Junior School and nearby houses in the south Wales village near Merthyr Tydfil were buried under one hundred fifty thousand tonnes of coal slurry. King Charles III, Queen Camilla, and the Prince of Wales joined survivors and families in the Aberfan Memorial Garden to lay wreaths and a posy with the last surviving teacher.
Background
An official inquiry in 1967 found the National Coal Board responsible for the disaster, noting that coal waste had been piled high above the village for years despite underground springs. No one was ever prosecuted, and leaders like National Coal Board chairman Lord Robens were not sacked. Professor Iain McLean, co-author of Aberfan - Government and Disaster, noted that counsels at the time said nobody thought of legal action. Survivors also faced injustices including money taken from a public disaster fund to remove remaining tips, limited compensation, and minimal trauma support.
Context
Royal visits to sites of historic national tragedies often provide comfort to aging survivors and bereaved families while keeping public memory alive. Disasters caused by industrial negligence frequently lead to long campaigns for justice when official accountability falls short.
