UPDATE - follow-up to Cargo vessel sinks off Beypore coast; all eight crew members rescued: A boat carrying about 160 tonnes of building supplies and other cargo went down far out at sea on Tuesday night.

The Rescue

The Indian Coast Guard saved all eight men on board and brought them safely to land by Wednesday morning. The ship, named MSV Jesus Heart, was travelling from Beypore to Kavaratti in Lakshadweep when it went down around 11:25 p.m. on Tuesday. Officials at Beypore Port stated that quick action by the rescue teams prevented a huge disaster, though authorities are still waiting to learn why the accident happened.

Context

Maritime rescue operations rely on rapid distress alerts to save lives when vessels face sudden danger at sea. Lakshadweep depends heavily on cargo vessels from the mainland to transport daily supplies and construction materials across the water.
