Eight crew members survived a shipwreck late Tuesday night when their cargo boat went down nearly 18 nautical miles from the Beypore coast. The vessel, named MSV Jesus Heart, sank at approximately 11.25 p.m. while heading toward Kavaratti in Lakshadweep. At the time of the accident, the ship was loaded with roughly 160 tonnes of building supplies and various other items. The Indian Coast Guard started a rescue mission immediately after getting the distress signal.
Rescue Operations
Rescuers deployed a tugboat to pick up the stranded sailors from the open sea. All eight men were safely returned to dry land by Wednesday morning. Port authorities in Beypore credited the swift response of the Coast Guard with preventing a serious disaster, though they are still gathering information about what caused the vessel to go down.
Context
Cargo vessels frequently travel between mainland ports like Beypore and the islands of Lakshadweep to supply essential goods and building materials. Maritime rescue teams maintain constant watch along these coastal routes to respond quickly when accidents or bad weather put vessels in danger.
