IIT Madras has opened a Rs 3.30‑crore robotics laboratory aimed at construction and infrastructure work. The lab is set up with support from Bechtel India under a signed MoU. It will give researchers and students space to build and test robotics and automation tools for building projects. Bechtel will feed industry requirements into the research and help shape curriculum. Professionals from Bechtel will mentor students and provide technical guidance. Selected students may intern at Bechtel offices as part of the partnership. The centre is expected to produce prototypes, research papers, patents and industry demonstrations. It will also give master’s students practical exposure beyond classroom lessons. The facility is led by IIT Madras professors Prof T. Asokan and Prof Koshy Varghese. The collaboration is planned as a long‑term effort lasting the next five to ten years. Over that period the two sides aim to support industry‑related projects and roll out new construction technologies.

ExplainerWhy this matters

What Happened

IIT Madras opened a Rs 3.30‑crore robotics lab for construction, working with Bechtel India under a formal MoU.

Why It Matters

The lab links academic research directly with real‑world construction needs, giving students hands‑on experience and industry mentors. By focusing on automation, it can help develop tools that make building projects faster, safer and cheaper. The partnership also creates a pipeline for internships and joint projects, increasing the chances that lab inventions move into commercial use.

What Happens Next

Over the next five to ten years the lab will test prototypes, file patents and publish papers. Students will continue to receive mentorship and internship slots at Bechtel. Successful technologies may be demonstrated to construction firms, potentially leading to wider adoption in Indian infrastructure projects.
