A performance test between the Hyundai Venue N Line DCT and the Skoda Kushaq AT reveals distinct strengths for both compact and midsize SUVs. Both vehicles run on a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, but they use different automatic gearboxes. The Venue N Line features a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, while the Kushaq employs an eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission. Weighing 1,300kg, the Kushaq is 42kg heavier than the 1,258kg Venue N Line. The Venue N Line produces 120hp, giving it five more horsepower than the Kushaq's 115hp output, resulting in a better power-to-weight ratio. However, the Kushaq offers slightly more torque at 178Nm compared to the Venue N Line's 172Nm, while both share a similar torque-to-weight ratio. In terms of cost, the Kushaq's automatic variants carry a higher price tag, ranging from Rs 1.33 lakh more for the base model to Rs 2.4 lakh more for the top specification. During acceleration tests from a standstill, the Skoda Kushaq achieves a better launch due to its torque-converter gearbox, recording a 0-100kph time of 11.83 seconds compared to the Venue N Line's 11.93 seconds. The Venue N Line's dual-clutch transmission is deliberately tuned for clutch longevity, slowing its initial launch. While both models include paddle shifters, the Venue N Line also provides three distinct drive modes—Eco, Normal, and Sport—alongside traction modes, features that are absent in the Kushaq. Once past initial turbo lag, the Venue N Line excels in rolling acceleration tests. In kickdown mode, the Venue N Line turbo-DCT is 0.60 seconds faster in the 20-80kph test at 6.21 seconds and 0.54 seconds faster in the 40-100kph test at 8.34 seconds. Testing standards involve maintaining recommended tyre pressures, using a full fuel tank, carrying two people on board, and recording data via GPS timing equipment in a controlled environment.
