Box Office Milestone

Rajinikanth's action thriller Jailer 2 is nearing major box office records after crossing a worldwide collection of Rs 582.45 crore in its first week. Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the film released on October 15 and has already surpassed Ajay Devgn-starrer Drishyam 3, which currently stands at a global gross of Rs 560.02 crore.

Earnings and Occupancy

On Wednesday, the film recorded an India net collection of Rs 28.15 crore across 14,470 shows, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. This marked a 40 percent drop from Tuesday's earnings of Rs 46.80 crore, bringing the total domestic net collection to Rs 317.20 crore. During the day, the Tamil market saw an overall occupancy of 45 percent, starting at 31.85 percent in the morning and rising to 53.08 percent for night screenings. The film also benefited from releasing during Navaratri with no competition in Tamil during Dussehra.

Cast and Crew

Produced by Kalanithi Maran of Sun Pictures with music by Anirudh Ravichander, the movie features Rajinikanth returning as retired jailer Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. The cast also includes Ramya Krishnan, Mirnaa, Rithvik, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu, and Vidya Balan. Jailer 2 currently trails behind 2.0, Leo, and Jailer on the list of highest-grossing Tamil movies ever, but its first-week numbers suggest it could soon challenge those titles.

Context

Major holiday release windows like Navaratri and Dussehra traditionally offer a strong boost to theatrical ticket sales in India. High-profile South Indian releases frequently take advantage of these festive periods to drive heavy opening week numbers across multiple language versions.
