The United Democratic Front took control of the Upputhara grama panchayat in Idukki on Thursday after a no-confidence motion against the Left Democratic Front passed with 10 votes.

The Vote

The 18-member local body had an even split of eight seats each for the UDF and LDF, along with one seat each for the BJP and an Independent. During the vote, BJP member Nisha Pradeep voted in favour of the UDF motion, while Independent member Ramani Roopesh also backed the UDF. Ms. Roopesh stated she left the LDF because it stalled local development projects.

Aftermath

The LDF had governed the panchayat for the past 10 years and ran the administration for the past 10 months with the help of the Independent member before losing power. Meanwhile, the BJP leadership stated that Ms. Pradeep violated the party whip and announced plans to take disciplinary action against her.

Context

Local body councils in India often rely on close math where single swing votes or small allied parties hold the balance of power. Disciplinary actions by political parties against members who defy official whips are a common internal response following cross-voting.
