Commuters at Bengaluru's Kempegowda Bus Station in Majestic face persistent daily difficulties, including messy traffic, poor lighting in subways, and a shortage of buses over the weekends. These issues persist months after Transport Minister Byrathi Suresh conducted surprise checks at the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation and Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation terminals in August.
Transport Hub Pressures
Majestic serves as the city's busiest transport centre by handling lakhs of passengers every day. The hub brings together the Kempegowda Bus Station, Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna Railway Station, and Kempegowda Metro Station close to each other. However, commuters note a lack of proper coordination between these different transport services. Private vehicles, cabs, and autorickshaws frequently take up bus bays. People also report rude staff and being overcharged for luggage.
Safety and Infrastructure
Pedestrians face high risks when crossing the busy stretch between the KSRTC and BMTC terminals to reach connecting services. While subways exist, poor maintenance and dim lighting stop people from using them. Commuters like software engineer Pradeep Kumar point out that changing from a metro train to a bus remains very difficult due to unsafe crossings and poor footpaths. Women express serious safety worries due to dark and poorly lit walking routes, especially after dark. Commuter Lavanya S. states that the area feels unsafe even in the day and causes constant worry about personal safety and belongings after dark.
Basic Amenities
Basic facilities like toilets and drinking water also draw heavy criticism from daily passengers. Nithin K., who uses the KSRTC terminal, highlights terrible toilet conditions and a lack of proper waiting areas for people with long layovers. Ramya Kumari notes that existing water dispensers are too few for a station of this size, and the water does not look clean enough, forcing people to buy bottled water which adds to the litter.
Official Response
Officials maintain that steps are being taken following the August ministerial inspection. They state that washrooms are kept clean and drinking water facilities have been provided across terminals. Furthermore, authorities are considering a redevelopment plan worth around 1,500 crore rupees to turn the Majestic bus terminals into modern facilities with better passenger amenities.
Context
Large transport hubs in major Indian cities often struggle to manage massive daily crowds and coordinate between different modes of public transport like buses, trains, and metros. Integrating these services requires constant upkeep of pedestrian pathways, lighting, and basic sanitation facilities to handle high passenger numbers safely. Major redevelopment projects in public transit typically take considerable time to move from initial planning stages to actual on-ground completion.
