Meeting in Manhattan

US President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani held a meeting at Gracie Mansion on Monday while the American leader was in town for the UN General Assembly. Trump offered a supportive pat on the back for the mayor, remarking that he hoped the local leader would turn out to be a great one and noting he was already off to a start.

Disagreement on Media Access

Despite the polite public atmosphere, the two leaders clashed over press freedom. Mamdani stated that he informed Trump he welcomes all media organizations to his local events, which contrasts with the White House decision last week to bar CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from its grounds over complaints of fake news. The three barred news groups filed a federal lawsuit on Monday to challenge the restriction as a violation of First Amendment rights. When a reporter asked if the media block was meant to draw attention away from the war in Iran and high fuel prices, Trump denied it, arguing that journalists have a duty to report fairly and that he never receives positive coverage.

Housing and Political Talks

Discussions also covered Mamdani's proposal to construct 12,000 affordable homes over Sunnyside Yard in Queens, a long-stalled project that has been debated for fifty years. Trump indicated that talks on the site would continue. In a separate interview with Christiane Amanpour, Mamdani addressed his relationship with critical local outlets like the New York Post and discussed the Democratic Party's strategy for upcoming midterm elections, arguing the party must prioritize affordability and working-class struggles over simple opposition.
